What is the difference between platinum and gold?

Platinum or white gold: which metal should you choose?

Although often confused because of their light hue, platinum and white gold are two precious metals with very distinct characteristics. Composition, colour, durability, care: there are several factors that help in understanding the differences between them and choosing the metal that best suits your needs.

What is the difference between platinum and gold? Chaumet shares its advice on how to tell them apart and make the right choice for you.

Gold

An emblematic precious metal in jewellery, gold captivates with its lustre and durability. At Chaumet, it comes in several colours, achieved through alloys with specific compositions.

3N yellow gold is made up of 75% gold, 12.5% silver and 12.5% copper. It is this balance that gives it its intense, luminous yellow colour.

5N rose gold combines 75% gold with 6% silver and 19% copper. This higher proportion of copper creates its signature pink shade.

White gold, or palladium grey gold, consists of 75% gold, 10% copper and 15% palladium. A thin layer of rhodium enhances its colour, adding to its lustre and shine.

Resistant to oxidation and easy to work with, gold plays a unique part in both jewellery and watchmaking. Its malleability allows artisans to shape it with precision, bringing even the most delicate creations to life.

Platinum

Unlike white gold, platinum has a naturally white colour. Chaumet uses exclusively 950/1000 platinum, an alloy comprising 95% platinum, prized for its purity and lustre.

Rare and exceptionally resistant to corrosion, platinum is an ideal precious metal for jewellery. Its density, malleability and ductility allow artisans to work it with great precision.

Denser and stronger than gold, platinum lends itself to crafting fine, delicate settings. Its naturally white colour also accentuates the brilliance of any diamonds, without the need for rhodium plating.

What is the difference between platinum and white gold?

Platinum and white gold both have a light colour that is especially popular in jewellery, but they have different characteristics. White gold captivates with its brilliant lustre, achieved through a thin layer of rhodium. Platinum, which is naturally white, is distinguished by its density and colour.

Over time, each metal changes in its own way. Rhodium plating helps to restore the shine of white gold and preserve its colour. Platinum gradually develops a subtle patina, which can also be revitalised with the right care.

The choice between platinum and white gold therefore depends, above all, on the piece of jewellery, the desired look and individual preferences. Two precious metals with unique qualities, shaped by the savoir-faire of the Maison’s artisans.
