In most countries in Europe, Australia and North America, the engagement ring is traditionally worn on the ring finger of the left hand. This tradition is linked to the ancient belief in the ‘vein of love’.

In the Middle East and in some parts of Eastern Europe, the engagement ring is worn on the ring finger of the right hand.

In Asia, customs vary from country to country, although wearing it on the ring finger of the left hand is becoming increasingly common.

The choice of finger depends primarily on local traditions and each couple’s preference.

On the wedding day, the wedding band is usually worn beneath the engagement ring.

Founded in 1931, the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) is the world’s leading authority for evaluating and certifying diamonds.

In the 1940s, the GIA developed the 4Cs system, which has since become the international standard for diamond grading.

All Chaumet diamonds weighing more than 0.30 carats come with a GIA certificate. The certificate includes an individual number laser-engraved on the diamond, invisible to the naked eye, which identifies the stone and serves as a guarantee of its authenticity and uniqueness.

Chaumet complies with the rules laid down by the Kimberley Process, an international certification scheme established in 2003 to stop conflict diamonds from entering the global market.

The Kimberley Process is an intergovernmental initiative involving numerous Member States.

Chaumet attaches the utmost importance to the ethical sourcing of its raw materials and to the traceability of the diamonds used in its creations.

The Chaumet-exclusive, 88-facet hexagonal-cut diamond is a signature creation by the Maison.

Cut individually by hand with exceptional precision, its 88 facets capture more light and reflect it with greater intensity than a traditional brilliant-cut diamond.

Melding technological innovation and expert craftsmanship, this exclusive Chaumet cut offers remarkable brilliance and fire.

The 4Cs are the standard system developed by the GIA for evaluating a diamond’s quality.

• Colour: measures the whiteness of a diamond, from D (perfectly white) to Z (slightly tinted).
• Clarity: assesses the presence of inclusions, ranging from FL (flawless) to I3 (inclusions visible to the naked eye).
• Cut: determines a diamond’s ability to capture and reflect light.
• Carat: refers to the weight of the diamond; 1 carat is equivalent to 0.20 grams.

None of the 4Cs is more important than the others. When selecting its diamonds, Chaumet favours stones graded D to G in colour, FL to VS in clarity and Excellent to Very Good in cut.

In addition to these criteria, there is a fifth criterion unique to Chaumet: Harmony, which captures the unique emotion evoked by each diamond.

To learn more about Chaumet's diamonds, please consult our dedicated page.

Couldn't find the answer to your question? Contact us.

The diamond colour scale developed by the GIA begins with the letter D in order to distinguish it from earlier classification systems that had already used the letters A, B and C.

When establishing its system in 1953, the GIA chose to start from scratch with the letter D in order to create an independent, universal and globally recognised classification system.

The quality of a diamond is assessed according to the GIA’s 4Cs: colour, clarity, cut and carat.

All Chaumet diamonds weighing more than 0.30 carats come with a GIA certificate detailing their characteristics and are engraved with a unique serial number, invisible to the naked eye, guaranteeing their authenticity.

The word ‘diamond’ comes from the Greek ‘adamas’, which means ‘indestructible’.

Diamond is the hardest natural mineral, with a grade of 10 out of 10 on the Mohs scale. However, a diamond can be scratched by another diamond and remains vulnerable to direct impacts.

To ensure your Chaumet jewellery remains in good condition, we recommend handling and wearing it with care.

Couldn't find the answer to your question? Contact us.

For diamonds of equal colour, clarity and cut quality, rarity increases with size.

As such, a 1-carat diamond is rarer and more valuable than two 0.5-carat diamonds that meet the same quality standards.

This rarity explains why the price of a 1-carat diamond is proportionally higher.

Chaumet jewellery is crafted from 18-carat gold, available in yellow, rose, and white gold, as well as 950 platinum.

These precious materials are selected in accordance with the Maison’s standards of excellence to ensure the quality, durability and brilliance of each piece of jewellery.

The main difference between white gold and platinum lies in their composition.

950‰ platinum comprises 95% pure platinum. Naturally white, it does not oxidise over time and provides excellent support for gemstones.

18-carat white gold is an alloy comprising 75% gold. It is covered with a thin layer of rhodium, which gives it its characteristic whiteness and brilliance.

Over time and with wear, this rhodium plating may deteriorate and require maintenance.

18-carat gold, also known as 750‰ gold, is an alloy comprising 75% pure gold combined with other metals to improve its strength and durability.

Chaumet uses only 18-carat gold for its jewellery, which is available in yellow, rose and white gold.

All Chaumet jewellery in 18-carat gold bears the eagle’s head hallmark, guaranteeing the purity of the metal used.

Certain Chaumet jewellery pieces can be personalised directly online.

You can have your jewellery engraved when placing your order, provided the piece is eligible for this service. At present, only Jeux de Liens necklaces and bracelets can be ordered with engraving directly on Chaumet.com.

Discover the personalisable creations.

You can also create a personalised Acrostiches bracelet by composing a message, first name or symbolic word using Chaumet’s precious alphabet. Each stone corresponds to the first letter of its name; certain letters can be represented by multiple gemstones, offering a wide range of personalisation options.

In addition, numerous pieces of Chaumet jewellery can be engraved after purchase. If your piece of jewellery is eligible for this service, you have one year from the date shown on your invoice to have it engraved at the Chaumet boutique of your choice.

Please note that personalised, engraved or made-to-measure jewellery may take longer to make and deliver. Personalised and engraved pieces cannot be refunded or exchanged.
