How do you clean a gold ring?

Precious advice from the Maison

Prized for its lustre and durability, gold stands the test of time. As a result, a Chaumet ring can be passed down, along with its deep sentimental value, from one generation to the next.

To preserve its beauty, a few simple steps are essential. Whilst time will naturally leave signs of wear and tear, proper care will protect the jewellery and preserve its shine for years to come.

How do you clean a gold ring? Chaumet is here to share all its tips with you.

Store it safely

When you aren’t wearing it, store your gold ring in its box or a felt pouch. This will protect it from scuffs and scratches.

Avoid harsh products

Remove your ring before doing anything that could damage it. Chlorine, alcohol, ammonia, and even certain cosmetics and perfumes can damage gold and dull its lustre.

Prevent knocks and scratches

It is best to take off your ring when gardening, playing sport, cooking or doing household chores. Knocking or scraping it against abrasive or metallic surfaces can mark the jewellery. You should also avoid extreme temperatures and sources of heat.

How often should a gold ring be cleaned?

Lightly cleaning your ring at home once or twice a month is recommended. To keep it looking its best, it can be professionally cleaned once a year.

What makes gold shine more brightly?

Regular maintenance helps to remove residual dust, soap and grease which dulls the gold. Polishing with a suitable cloth also helps to enhance its shine.

How to look after diamond jewellery

Although renowned for its exceptional hardness, diamond is nonetheless vulnerable to impact. In particular, contact with other stones should be avoided, as this could damage the jewellery.

Since diamonds tend to attract oils, it is also advisable to remove your jewellery before using soap, cream or any other cosmetic product.

How to clean a gold ring

To clean a gold Chaumet ring, it is recommended you take it to a Chaumet boutique. There, the Maison’s experts can adapt the maintenance they perform to its materials and finishes.
If you’re unable to visit a boutique, here are a few tips for taking care of your gold ring at home.

Step 1: for gold rings without stones only, place the jewellery in a glass container and use a pH-neutral liquid soap that is free from colourings.

Step 2: gently clean the ring using a soft-bristled brush, without applying excessive pressure.

Step 3: rinse the ring thoroughly in clean, lukewarm water.

Step 4: gently dry the jewellery with a soft, light-coloured, lint-free cloth. Use a microfibre cloth or a chamois.

Take your ring to the Maison’s advisors

Over time, the lustre of a gold ring may naturally fade. It is recommended that you have its condition checked regularly in a boutique. Chaumet’s advisors will be able to carry out an assessment and, if necessary, entrust the creation to the Maison’s artisans who can then restore its shine.

Regular attention should also be paid to the clasps and safety mechanisms on jewellery and chains. Checking these ensures they are working properly and protects the piece in the long run.

Every Chaumet creation is designed to stand the test of time. Proper care and a gentle touch help to preserve their beauty, so that they can one day be passed on in turn.
